HINARI Access to Research Initiative > Eligibility

Eligibility

Local, not-for-profit institutions in two groups of countries may register for access to the journals through HINARI. The country lists are based on GNI per capita (World Bank figures, 2006). Institutions in countries with GNI per capita below $1250 are eligible for free access. Institutions in countries with GNI per capita between $1250-$3500 pay a fee of $1000 per year / institution. (See lists of countries, areas and territories below)

If your institution is in a Band 1 (free access) country, then HINARI is free. If your institution is in a Band 2 (low-cost access) country, HINARI costs US $1000 per institution per calendar year (from January through December). This cost remains fixed no matter what point during the calendar year you choose to pay. For instance, if you pay in April, you will have access from April to December of that calendar year. All institutions registering from Band 2 countries are entitled to a 3 month free trial.

If your institution is in Band 2 (low-cost access) country, and you cannot or choose not to pay the annual fee, your institution will still be eligible for free access to a certain number of journals. The journals offered for free to all countries are: American Academy of Family Physicians (2 journals); American Academy of Pediatrics (5 journals); American Heart Association-LWW (5 journals); American Medical Association (10 journals); American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. (7 journals); American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3 journals); American Society of Clinical Oncology (1 journal); Berkeley Electronic Press (5 journals); BioOne (128 journals); BMJ Publishing Group (29 journals); European Respiratory Society (3 journals); International Medical Press (2 journals); IOS Press (64 journals); Mary Ann Liebert (66 journals); New England Journal of Medicine (1 journal); Nature Publishing (67 journals); Rockefeller University Press (3 journals); Royal College of General Practitioners (1 journal); Schattauer Publishers (4 journals), Science (1 journal); and the University of Toronto Press (1 journal)
