Registration & Eligibility

How can I find out if my country is eligible to participate?

You can consult the list of the two groups of countries that are eligible to participate in HINARI. Please check Eligibility Web page.

How do you determine which countries are eligible?

Local, not-for-profit institutions in two groups of countries may register for access to the publications through HINARI. The country lists are based on three factors: GNI per capita (World Bank figures), United Nations Least Developed Country (LDCs) List and Human Development Index (HDI). Institutions in countries with at least one of the following criteria may be eligible for free access: inclusion in the LDCs; an HDI of less than 0.63; or GNI per capita at or below $1600. Institutions in countries that do not match at least one of the above criteria and with either a GNI per capita less than $5000 or HDI at or below 0.67 may be eligible to pay a fee of $1000 per year

Which type of institutions are eligible?

The eligible institutions are: universities, research institutes, professional schools (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and dentistry), teaching hospitals, government offices and national medical libraries. HINARI does not accept registrations from individuals, but only from institutions.

Which institutions in my country are participating?

If you go to the registration form on our website, in the second paragraph, there is a link to the list of our registered universities and professional schools currently using HINARI.

Why are some countries not eligible if GNI is less than US$4700?

The publishers participating in HINARI have not, for the time being, extended their offer to countries where they have significant levels of existing subscriptions and, in some cases, local sales staff. The Publisher’s Statement of Intent reflects this.

How can I register my institution to HINARI?

If you determine that your institution meets the eligibility criteria listed on our website, please complete the on-line registration form. Only one registration is required per institution. We will send you instructions for getting started and a licence agreement to sign with the terms of use.

I filled out the registration form, can I now access HINARI?

Once The HINARI Team has processed your completed registration form, you will be contacted and given detailed instructions on how to access and use the system. This usually takes four to six weeks. It is essential that your institution complete all of the fields in the registration form with the information requested. Failure to complete all of the fields in the form will result in delays in processing your application.
