Forecasting antiretroviral demand
Meetings on ARV global demand forecasting
The Secretary-General of the United Nations met with the heads of the major pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies working on HIV/AIDS in October 2008. Both the UN and the companies are committed to place the issue of AIDS high on their respective agendas for years to come. As part of its commitment, WHO HIV/AIDS Department AIDS Medicines and Diagnostics Service team - together with UNAIDS - has hosted annual technical consultations on ARV forecasting and the needs in appropriate products since 2005. The last consultation took place on 9 and 10 December 2010 in Geneva.

Geneva, 9&10 December 2010
WHO and UNAIDS jointly organize annually a consultation with ARV innovators and generic companies and active pharmaceutical ingredients producers. The objectives were:

- to share information on current ARV market in low and middle income countries and WHO/UNAIDS forecasts for supporting companies in the planning of their production capacity for 2011 and 2012;
- to share latest developments in the WHO HIV/AIDS Strategy and new global initiatives including Treatment 2.0 and Elimination of Vertical Transmission;
- to invite the major funding agencies for ART (GFATM, PEPFAR, UNITAID) to share information on the current availability of funding and funding projections.
