Political support for PrEP role in HIV prevention
When the iPrEx study announced the PrEP study results for MSM and transgender women in 2010, the US President Barack Obama, hailed the news.
"I am encouraged by this announcement of groundbreaking research on HIV prevention," he said on 23 November 2010. "While more work is needed, these kinds of studies could mark the beginning of a new era in HIV prevention."
The tone was set for high-level political support for the importance of PrEP in overcoming the HIV epidemic in the USA and globally. The following year, on 1 December 2011, President Obama called for an end to AIDS.
