The first HIV case in Vietnam, a developing country with a population of 83.1 million, was reported in 1990. Since then, the number of HIV cases has dramatically increased. Through 2006, ~20 000 AIDS cases and 11 000 AIDS-related deaths were reported to the Ministry of Health (MOH). Vietnam has a concentrated epidemic; the majority of cases are among intravenous drug users (IDU) and commercial sex workers (CSW). The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimated that the overall prevalence of HIV among adults (15–49 years old) was 0.5%; however, the prevalence among IDUs, CSWs and pregnant women was 26%, 3.5% and 0.37%, respectively.
