Conclusions: WHO and U.S. NIH working group meeting on treatment for HIV prevention among MSM: What additional evidence is required?
Meeting report, Geneva, 26-27 October 2011
Overview
Recent results from the HPTN052 trial have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) as prevention in serodiscordant couples. Given that most HIV-uninfected participants in this trial were exposed to HIV by the penile and cervicovaginal routes, can we extrapolate the results to MSM and others who may be frequently exposed through anorectal intercourse? WHO and NIH convened key investigators, and selected public health experts, AIDS programme managers, civil society representatives to consider what additional evidence may be required before earlier initiation of cART for HIV prevention among MSM and women who engage in anal sex can be recommended.
