The report begins with an update on some of the main features of the HIV/AIDS global epidemic with a particular focus on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. It underlines the nature and dynamics of the epidemic in the Region as well as some indications of the seriousness of the problem as it unfolds. The report identifies some problems in the national responses to HIV/AIDS and reviews the work of the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean Region in the fields of HIV related prevention and care for 1999. It highlights some of the challenges ahead, based on what is actually known about the situation and the consensus recommendations of the 10th Intercountry Meeting of National AIDS Programme Managers, 24–27 May 1999, Tunis, Tunisia.
