HIV/AIDS Surveillance in Europe (2000)

European Centre for the Epidemiological Monitoring of AIDS (EuroHiv)
End-year report 2000, 2001; N° 64

This report presents data on cases of AIDS and newly diagnosed HIV infections (including those who have developed AIDS) reported by 31 December 1999 in the 51 countries of the WHO European Region.

Recent AIDS incidence is strongly modified by the effects of highly active antiretroviral treatments (HAART) and no longer represents a reliable indicator of past HIV transmission. Data on newly diagnosed HIV infections, presented here in detail for the first time, provide a more up to date picture of the HIV situation and are not directly influenced by HAART. However, these data should be interpreted with caution because they do not represent HIV incidence, they depend heavily on HIV testing patterns and they are still very incomplete in the most severely affected western European countries.
