Prevention of HIV infection in infants and young children has become a priority in most countries heavily affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. The international community has recognized the magnitude of the problem and several initiatives have been launched to reinforce countries' efforts to scale up prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programmes.
