Launch of the Global Health Workforce Alliance Task Force on Education and Training. 13 March 2007, Geneva
The Task Force will bring together leaders in health and education to champion the need for increased investment in the education and training of health workers in developing countries. Its goal will be to develop practical and evidence-based proposals for international action to scale-up education and training for health workers in developing countries, and secure commitment from international partners to technical and financial support and to enhanced donor coordination.
High-Level Consultation on nursing and midwifery, Islamabad, 4-6 March 2007
The meeting brought together high-level decision makers in the area of nursing and midwifery to assess and refine the strategic directions for nursing and midwifery, in view of Resolutions WHA59.23 and WH59.27. The meeting resulted in the adoption of the Islamabad Declaration on Strengthening Nursing and Midwifery: Scaling up capacity to reach the Millennium Development Goals and the priority health programme targets. The Declaration was read out by the Federal Health Minister, Mohammad Naseer Khan. The Declaration recommended three main areas for urgent attention: scaling up nursing and midwifery capacity; skill-mix of existing and new cadres of workers; and positive workplace environment.
High Level Inter Ministerial Technical Consultation on Strengthening Political Support for Health Workforce Development To Tackle HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria and Accelerate Progress Towards MDGs In Africa. 3-5 March 2007, Gaborone, Botswana
The objectives of the meeting were to reach consensus on priority actions necessary at country and regional levels in order to address the health workforce crisis in Africa. The meeting identified a set of actions that participants agreed to champion on return to their countries and proposed a set of issues requiring discussion and decision. These issues will be on the agenda of the forthcoming Conference of the African Ministers of Health of the African Union, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 9 to 13 April 2007.
