Assessment of the health system and policy environment as a critical complement to tracking intervention coverage for maternal, newborn and child health
In 2008, the Countdown to 2015 initiative identified 68 priority countries for action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals with regard to maternal, newborn and child health. The assessment was a response to increasing attention being paid to the broader health systems context as a critical determinant for scaling up effective health interventions. A series of indicators was defined and measured for monitoring the health system and policy environment, including the health workforce, needed to assure quality and efficiency of care. -
