Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA) Board Meeting 13–15 April 2007, Pilanesburg, South Africa

The Board reviewed GHWA's work during its first year of operations. Working groups and task forces on scaling up education and training, advocacy, tools and guidelines, and health workers migration have started to meet, convened by GHWA. Other activities, such as the collaboration with WHO/HIV on the Treat, Train and Retain Initiative and on country operations were also discussed.


Second meeting of the Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA) Task Force on scaling up education and training of health workers, 12–13 April 2007, Johannesburg, South Africa

The Task Force members re-enforced their commitment to provide politically feasible and financially affordable recommendations for countries and donors for scaling up production of health workers. The WHO Department of Human Resources for Health (HRH) will provide technical input on matters related to success factors for scaling up, types of workers, methods and approaches for training and education of health workers, and financial implications. HRH will also coordinate the development of a final road map of recommendations for countries and donors on what to scale up, how to scale up and how much will it cost.


Third Session of the African Union Conference of Ministers of Health, 9–13 April 2007, Johannesburg, South Africa

The theme of the Conference was 'Strengthening of health systems for equity and development in Africa'. The conference was attended by the Ministers of Health of the African Union countries, delegates and representatives of international and bilateral agencies and regional economic communities. The participants discussed, inter alia, the Africa Health Strategy. A half-day session was dedicated to an inter-ministerial consultation on human resources for health.
