Seminar on Human Resources for Health Data Management, 28-29 November 2007, Bridgetown, Barbados

Research teams from 12 Caribbean countries on human resources for health (HRH) development met to address information priorities. The invited stakeholders finalized the core data set on HRH that would be developed for the sub-region, and discussed methodologies for building national capacities for maintaining a national HRH database and for using this information to inform strategic planning and policy making. Participants came from ministries of health, University of West Indies, World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization, and research and consulting agencies. The discussions were held in the context of increasing emphasis on the need to develop processes to collect, interpret and update HRH data so that countries can recognize trends, coordinate efforts for change, and track the effects of development initiatives.

Technical meeting on the Workload Indicators of Staffing Needs (WISN) methodology, 15-16 November 2007, Geneva, Switzerland

This informal technical meeting brought together invited experts to review the Workload Indicators of Staffing Needs (WISN) methodology, a tool developed and field-tested by WHO for setting activity (time) standards for government health staff and translating these into workloads as a rational method of setting staffing levels in health facilities. Participants shared experiences in its application and lessons learnt at the country and regional levels, discussed its strengths and limitations, and prioritized recommended action points for the development of computer-aided WISN studies and teaching aids.
