Towards the Development of WHO Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery 2016-2020
Nursing and midwifery has a long and distinguished history within the World Health Organization, reflected through the decisions of governing bodies and the adoption of World Health Assembly (WHA) resolutions which have culminated in 10 WHA resolutions since 1948. The Organization is now in the process of developing and finalizing its Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery for the period 2016-2020.
Experts met in Geneva from 18-19 January 2016 to undertake the final consultation on the Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery Development (SDNM) 2016-2030. The development of the document followed an elaborate process that began with an expert consultation in Jordan on 24 April 2015, a second expert consultation in Geneva from 17-18 September 2015 and a global web-based consultation from December 2015 to January 2016. The final SDNM 2016-2020 will be launched in Geneva on 18 May 2016.
