WHO is striving to strengthen nursing and midwifery services in Member States. In 2002, strategic framework and direction were developed:

Health planning, advocacy and political commitment

Management of health personnel for nursing and midwifery services

Develop and implement national employment policies that are gender-sensitive, based on healthy and safe working environments, that provide equitable rewards and recognition of competences and are linked to a transparent career structure.

Practice and health system improvement

The Strategic Directions 2002-2008 are being updated. The new version "Strategic Directions on strengthening nursing and midwifery Services 2009-2015" will be available in January 2009.
