Education and training resource package for scaling-up professional competencies of primary health care providers

Making pregnancy safer

  • Midwifery education modules: education for safe motherhood 2nd ed. (2007)
These training manuals, comprising seven modules, equip midwives with essential life-saving skills. The manuals, which have been widely field-tested, are logically organized and abundantly illustrated. They communicate the knowledge that midwives need to think critically in order to make the right decisions and apply the appropriate clinical skills, particularly in life-and-death emergencies. The modules have been prepared for the in-service training of midwives and nurse-midwives, and rely on a range of problem-based learning methods designed to maximize student involvement.
  • Managing complications in pregnancy and childbirth (2003)
This manual is written for midwives and doctors at the district hospital who are responsible for the care of women with complications of pregnancy, childbirth or the immediate postpartum period including immediate problems of the newborn. This easy-to-use manual is arranged by symptoms and a corresponding diagnosis table is provided. The emphasis of the manual is on rapid assessment and decision-making. The clinical action steps are based on clinical assessment with limited reliance on laboratory or other tests and most are possible in a variety of clinical settings (e.g. district hospital or health centre).
