The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) metathesaurus that the Search Portal uses to generate synonyms of search terms has been updated to Version 2009AA. Details on updates to the Search Portal are kept in the version history document which can be found on the site. You can also find more details on UMLS on the United States National Library of Medicine website.

Today the Pan African Clinical Trial Registry was officially launched at the AVAREF forum in Nigeria.

To better identify trials in children, the search strategy has been revised. Using both age criteria and a keyword search, improves our ability to correctly identify records for children's trials. We will continue to make modifications to the search strategy based upon user feedback. If you have suggestions, please contact us.

To improve the transparency of scientific research, WHO has established a system of assigning a number to each clinical trial to make it easier to uniquely identify trials. The unique number will also make it possible to track trials that are taking place in several countries and at different institutions.

ICTRP web pages and web-accessible documents that are no longer in use have been removed. Those responsible for websites linking to ICTRP web content are advised to check their links and to update them as appropriate.

Version 3.1 of the ICTRP Search Portal, released on 30 April 2009, provides direct links to individual trial registration records based on the main trial registration ID issued by the data provider. For example, the record with a main trial registration ID of ISRCTN91899513 can now be viewed directly via the following link: http://www.who.int/trialsearch/trial.aspx?trialid=ISRCTN91899513.

The Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT) became a data provider to the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform Search Portal. Trial registration records from IRCT can now be searched and viewed via the ICTRP Search Portal.

The Sri Lanka Clinical Trials Registry (SLCTR) became a data provider to the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform Search Portal. Trial registration records from SLCTR can now be searched and viewed via the ICTRP Search Portal.

Volume 2, Issue 1 of the Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine focuses on the progress made in clinical trials registration over recent years. It includes articles from WHO Primary Registries in China, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Germany, Japan and Sri Lanka and a covering commentary from the ICTRP.

WHO has received US$ 9.7 million in grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to work with UNICEF to conduct crucial research in children’s medicines, with the aim of increasing the number of child-size medicines designed and formulated specifically for children.
