Professor Jon S. Abramson

Jon S. Abramson is the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, WFUSM, and Physician-in-chief of Brenner Children’s Hospital.

Professor Abramson received his undergraduate degree at Boston University and medical degree from WFUSM. He did a pediatric residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He joined the faculty at WFUSM in 1981 and served as the elected Chair of the Wake Forest University Physicians clinical practice group from 2001 until 2007.

Professor Abramson served as a council member of the Society for Pediatric Research, or SPR and was elected President of the SPR in 1995. From 1995 to 2003 he was a member and Chair, 1999 – 2003, of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Committee on Infectious Diseases and as part of this activity was involved in the publication of the 2000 and 2003 Red Book. From 2003 until 2007 he was a member, and Chair 2005 to 2007, of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

Professor Abramson’s research interests broadly fall into the category of the use of vaccines in children. He has a particularly long-standing focus on the area of influenza where he has conducted basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis of influenza virus-induced bacterial superinfections and the use of vaccines in the prevention of influenza.
