Professor Hyam Bashour (Vice-Chair)

Hyam Bashour, MD, MSc, PhD, is a Professor of Epidemiology and Community Health at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Damascus University, and Acting Director of the Centre for Medical Education Development at Damascus University.

Professor Bashour graduated as Medical Doctor from Aleppo University in Syria and received her MSc in Community Health and PhD in Epidemiology from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK. Since 1991 she has been working for Damascus University where she chaired the Department of Family and Community Medicine from 2001-2007 and served as a Vice Dean for Scientific Affairs in 2008-2009.

Professor Bashour's principal research interests include child and maternal health, and she acts as the Country Coordinator for Choices and Challenges in Changing Childbirth, a regional multidisciplinary network in the Middle East based at the American University of Beirut, and is a member of the Consultative Committee of a research network known as Reproductive Health Working Group. She serves on many public health-related committees at a national, regional and international level and engages occasionally in consultancy work for numerous organizations such as the Arab Women Organization, UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO.
