Professor David Salisbury

Director - Immunization, Department of Health, United Kingdom

David Salisbury is the Director of Immunization at the Department of Health of United Kingdom, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health. He has an honorary Chair at Imperial College, London.

Professor Salisbury graduated from London University in 1969. He trained as a paediatrician in Oxford and at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London. At present, he leads a large multidisciplinary team at the Department of Health, that is responsible for implementation of the national immunization programme, its management, communications on immunization, the science supporting immunization, vaccine supply and informatics. He teaches nationally and internationally on many aspects around immunization, focusing on the challenges of introducing new vaccines'.

In addition to his responsibilities in United Kingdom, Professor Salisbury works extensively for the World Health Organization's on the Global Programme for Vaccines. He is the Chairman of the European Region Certification Commission for Poliomyelitis Eradication, and is a member of the Eastern Mediterranean Polio Elimination Certification Commission, and the South East Asian Polio Elimination Certification Commission. From 2005 until 2010, he served as the Chairman of WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts, SAGE, on Vaccines and as a member of WHO's Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety.

Professor Salisbury is the Co-chairman of the Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Group for the Global Health Security Action Group of G7 countries. He is a Liaison Member of the US Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices, ACIP, and the US National Vaccine Advisory Committee. He also chairs the European Vaccine Advisory Group for the European Centre for Disease Control, ECDC and is a member of the Policy and Practice Committee of the GAVI Alliance.

Professor Salisbury has written around 80 publications on immunization and paediatric topics. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the Queen’s 2001 Birthday Honours.
