SAGE working group on pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine - Request for membership suggestions
SAGE has decided on the creation of a small working group to work with the secretariat and prepare a proposed revised position paper on the use of polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine for discussion at its November 2007 meeting. The specific terms of reference and needed expertise to serve on this working group are provided below.
The World Health Organization is soliciting suggestions of experts who could serve on this working group. Please send suggested names with affiliation and indication of expertise by email to duclosp@who.int no later than 25 May.

Terms of reference
The working group will be specifically asked to review the evidence with respect to the following seven questions/issues and to propose to SAGE related recommendations on vaccine use, maintaining or updating the recommendations stated in the 2003 position paper.
- Review of available data on burden of pneumococcal disease in adults and in high risk groups
- Effectiveness of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) in elderly population
- Effectiveness of PPV23 in high risk groups
- Safety and efficacy of repeated doses of PPV23 in older children and adults
- Use of PPV23 to boost kids previously immunized with the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7)
- Impact of giving PPV23 to pregnant women/women of reproductive age in order to prevent pneumococcal disease in infants in the first few months of life
- Consideration of the potential use of PPV23 to mitigate pandemic influenza disease
The group will also identify any additional critical question and will prepare a draft updated position paper on use of PPV23 vaccines.
