  Table of contents

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is the most important form of viral encephalitis in Asia, causing at least 50 000 cases of clinical disease and 10 000 deaths each year, mostly among children. In recent decades outbreaks of JE have occurred in several previously non-endemic areas, and the high fatality rate and frequent residual neuropsychiatric sequelae in survivors make JE a considerable public health problem in many Asian regions.
