DEBT RELIEF INITIATIVES AND IMMUNIZATION FINANCING

In 2000, Malawi qualified for interim debt relief under the enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative. By reaching the completion point in August 2006, Malawi could access the full amount of HIPC debt relief. The sum of forgone debt service will amount to approximately US$1.6 billion over time.

Moreover, debt stock cancellations granted by the International Development Association, the International Monetary Fund and the African Development Fund under the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) in 2006 are supposed to result in additional savings of US$1.59 billion.

HIPC debt relief resources are reported to be ring-fenced for protected pro-poor expenditures for which a special tracking system is in place.
