As of July 2009, the World Health Organization estimates that globally 363,000 (242,000 - 517,000) HIV negativ child deaths under five years of age occurred during 2000 due to Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) and 735,000 (519,000 – 825,000) HIV negativ child deaths under five years of age occurred during 2000 due to pneumococcal (Streptococcus pneumoniae) infections. Estimation of cases and deaths by pathogen is summarized below. 3% of all cause-child mortality under five were due to Hib infections. 7% of all cause-child mortality under five were due to pneumococcal infections.
