SHORTLIST OF CANDIDATES FOR THE POST OF DIRECTOR-GENERAL

 

 

The Executive Board of the WHO has agreed, in a private session (January 20, 1998), a short list of candidates for the post of Director-General of the World Health Organization. The short listed candidates in alphabetical order are:

    • Sir George A. O. ALLEYNE
    • Dr Gro Harlem BRUNDTLAND
    • Dr Nafis SADIK
    • Dr Ebrahim Malick SAMBA
    • Dr UTON M. Rafei

The Executive Board will next meet, again in private session, to consider the election of the Director-General on Monday 26 January, 1998 when each candidate will be interviewed. Next day (Tuesday 27) the Executive Board will vote to select a nominee for the post. Once the election process has been completed, the name of the successful candidate will be announced in plenary.

In May 1998, at the World Health Assembly, Member States will be asked to confirm the selection of the Executive Board.

All Executive Board meetings concerning the election are held in private until the name of the successful candidate is announced.
