DR JORGE JIMÉNEZ DE
LA JARA OF CHILE ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THE WHO EXECUTIVE BOARD
The Chilean physician, Dr Jorge Jiménez de la Jara, was unanimously elected Chairman of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) at its 106th session in Geneva. The Executive Board has members from 32 countries, and Dr Jiménez de la Jara will chair it in 2000-2001. The 56-year-old Dr Jiménez de la Jara, who is currently Professor of Public Health at the Universidad Catolica, was Minister of Health and Ambassador to Italy in the two previous governments. He has published over seventy articles and ten books on public health, paediatrics and infectious diseases. He has worked as a consultant for the PanAmerican Health Organization, the InterAmerican Development Bank, the World Bank, the Rockefeller Foundation and a number of other multilateral agencies. He graduated in medicine from the Universidad Catolica in 1968, going on to specialize in paediatrics (University of Chile, 1974), respiratory diseases (University of London, 1973) and public health (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, 1988).
