Fifth meeting of the Advisory Group

The GAP Advisory Group (AG) discussed the progress made under three GAP objectives since 2010 at its fifth annual meeting on 5 May 2001 in Cancun, Mexico.

Dr Marie-Paule Kieny, Assistant Director General for Innovation, Information, Evidence and Research cluster (WHO), provided update on the recommendations made at the previous AG's meeting in May, 2010 in Nha Trang, Viet Nam, and their status of implementation.

The AG noted considerable achievements that have been made over the past year in the areas of influenza vaccine use promotion, technology transfer to the developing countries as well as research and development of new technologies. Recommendations of the AG for 2011/2012 will be documented in the meeting report.

The GAP AG consultation followed the fourth conference with international partners on prospects for influenza vaccine technology transfer to developing countries (May 4-5, 2011). The purpose of the meeting was to review progress on the WHO technology transfer projects and to facilitate networking between the grantees and development partners. WHO is currently supporting eleven technology transfer projects in Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Romania, Serbia, Thailand and Viet Nam. The meeting was jointly organized by WHO and BIRMEX, Laboratorios de Biológicos y Reactivos de México.

Dr José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, Secretary of Health, Mexico, addressed the group at the end of the first day.

The Secretary congratulated WHO on the successful implementation of the initiative to improve production capacity of flu vaccine and highlighted the leadership role of the World Health Organization in coordinating influenza preparedness efforts worldwide.
