UNIDO has concentrated all of the IOMC-related activities in chemicals management in the Environment Branch. Related activities cover, inter alia, cleaner production and clean technology; BAT and BEP technical skills and knowledge; capacity building to introduce or enhance the sound management of chemicals; promoting safety, health and environmental protection through risk reduction studies and dissemination of information; supporting regional efforts to research harmful chemicals preparations; evaluate and introduce environmentally sound chemicals and alternative formulations. Our services are delivered through:

  • A network of over 50 National Cleaner Production Centres; Development of policies and transfer of methodologies and technologies for the monitoring, treatment, recycling, and disposal of toxic and hazardous wastes; Establishment a regional network on safe pesticide production and information for the Asia and Pacific region (RENPAP), promotion of the Chemical Leasing concept, promotion of water efficiency with the Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies programme (TEST) and active participation in chemical management through SAICM, ICCM and IOMC;
  • The development of GEF-financed enabling activities for the Stockholm and Minamata Conventions, as well as projects funded by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. Evaluation and promotion of Best Available Techniques and Best Environmental Practices and alternative materials thereby removing barriers to meeting Conventions obligations, Protocols, as well as projects under the International Water focal area;
  • Phase-out of 63.400 metric tons of Ozone Depleting Potential during more than 20 years of implementing Montreal Protocol objectives; Introduction of technologies and methodologies to prevent environmental release of toxic chemicals from various industry sectors such as textiles, leather tanning, small-scale mining.
