Dr Ferid Shannoun
Dr Ferid Shannoun joined WHO as a Scientist in September 2007. He received his degrees from German universities in Giessen, Kaiserslautern and Bielefeld. He is a Medical Physics Expert with a complementary education in Public Health.
Prior to joining the WHO he worked for the Radiation Protection Authority in Luxembourg and became in October 2005 a lecturer for medical radiation protection at the Institute of Medical Physics and Radiation Protection/University of Applied Science in Giessen.
His research interests include the medical use of radiation in diagnosis and therapy, and the health effects of radiation exposures. Dr Shannoun participates in several European Research Projects such as DIMOND, SENTINEL and DOSE DataMed.
Within the Radiation team, his main focus is on the safe use of radiation in diagnostic and treatment and the technical coordination of the WHO International Radon Project.
Dr Shannoun is member of the medical imaging group of the Scientific Council in Luxembourg, and of the European Cancer Network (ECN) in Lyon, as well as several other scientific associations. He is editor, author and co-author of over 40 scientific publications and presentations.
