Announcement of new FAO/WHO joint nutrient risk assessment project
The FAO and WHO (through IPCS) have started a joint project to develop scientific principles for nutrient risk assessment. The project is in the planning phase and will include a transparent process for seeking input from interested groups and experts.
The project will define a scientifically-based and internationally applicable approach for nutrient risk assessment and assist in addressing issues such as tolerable upper levels for vitamins and minerals. In this context, the work will be useful to the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Use and other components of the Codex Alimentarius as well as Member States.
A concept paper is being completed to provide general information about the issues to be addressed. A key part of the project development will be a public request for information as well as an open web-based opportunity to provide comment in order to clarify key issues and identify needed expertise. An interdisciplinary Technical Workshop on the topic is anticipated and background papers will be developed for discussion at the Workshop. The tentative date for the Technical Workshop is May 2005.
Further information will be published on this website as it becomes available.
