The Great East Japan Earthquake – support and outreach from Tono City and its residents
The Great East Japan Earthquake tore through the eastern coastal region of Japan, with its epicentre 130km east of Sendai City. The tsunami that followed devastated the coastal areas of Tohoku and southern Hokkaido. More than 15,000 people lost their lives with 3,000 people reported missing. Tono City had developed a regional disaster prevention plan and as part of its contingency plans, carried out regular fire and evacuation drills.
