THE WHO MACROECONOMICS AND HEALTH SUPPORT SECRETARIAT
The Secretariat, situated in WHO’s cluster of Sustainable Development and Healthy Environments under the Executive Director Dr. David Nabarro will support macroeconomics and health work through WHO’s network of technical departments, Regional and Country Offices and development partners. Work involves close coordination with the Earth Institute at Columbia University directed by Jeffrey Sachs.
WHO gratefully acknowledges the grant provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This grant will support work for countries that are launching the CMH Report and responding to the Report's recommendations to achieve better health outcomes for the poor.
LAUNCH: NEW WEB SITE FOR MACROHEALTH
Final efforts are under way for the launch of MacroHealth web site in November 2002 to expand on the existing CMH site. The web site will provide information on MacroHealth’s main areas of activity and country achievements, in addition to housing the CMH report and Working Groups’ papers which are now posted here.
NEW PUBLICATIONS
The final reports of CMH Working Groups 1: Health, Economic Growth, and Poverty Reduction and 5: Improving Health Outcomes for the Poor are now available and copies can be obtained from WHO’s Marketing & Dissemination. Working Group 1 addressed the impact of health investments on poverty reduction and economic growth, while working Group 5 examined the technical options, constraints and costs for mounting a major global effort to improve the health of the poor, dramatically by 2015.
The reports of Working Group 2: Global Public Goods for Health, Working Group 3: Mobilization of Domestic Resources for Health, Working Group 4: Health and the International Economy, and Working Group 6: International Development Assistance and Health will be available by the end of October.
The CMH report has been printed in English, French, Spanish and Chinese; copies of the report in any of these languages can be obtained from WHO’s Marketing & Dissemination, e-mail: bookorders@who.int. Russian and Arabic translations of the report will be available in November 2002.
The WHO Representative in Thailand and representative to ESCAP is actively pursuing efforts to place MacroHealth at the core of activities of ESCAP's newly created section on health and development. The 59th Commission meeting of ESCAP will be held in May 2003 using the theme "Investing in Health" and will examine CMH work and recommendations.THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMISSION FOR ASIA AND THE PACIFIC (ESCAP)
