Doctor Allan Schapira

Independent consultant in malaria and tropical medicine, The Philippines

Dr Allan Schapira is a retired Danish medical doctor who worked on malaria and other vector borne diseases at WHO for 17 years, in Headquarters and the WHO Western Pacific Region. Before joining WHO, he worked in district health services in Botswana and Mozambique and conducted research on antimalarial drug resistance. From 2007 to 2009 he worked with the malaria modelling group at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, with which he is still connected, although he now lives in The Philippines.

In recent years, he has undertaken consultancies related to artemisinin resistance in the Greater Mekong Subregion, general malaria control planning and evaluation in Africa and India, certification of malaria elimination and community-based dengue control. His expertise is in all areas of malaria control and encompasses health system dimensions, economic evaluation and inter-sectoral and ecological aspects.
