20 December 2013 -- The report on the last Malaria Policy Advisory Committee meeting, held on 11-13 September 2013, is now available. The report and all related documentation can be consulted on the dedicated MPAC meetings page.

World Malaria Report 2013 launched in Washington, DC

11 December 2013 -- WHO launched the latest World Malaria Report at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The report summarizes information received from malaria-endemic countries and other sources, and updates the analyses presented in the 2012 report.

Scaling up integrated community case management (iCCM)

11 December 2013 -- Read a feature article about a project run by the WHO Global Malaria Programme with a grant from the Government of Canada, seeking to reduce under-five deaths in remote areas of five countries in Africa.

Report of the first country consultation on the Global Technical Strategy 2016-2025

5 December 2013 -- The meeting report presents the conclusions of the first country consultation on the development of the Global Technical Strategy for Malaria Control and Elimination 2016-2025, held in Geneva on 14-15 October.

New training manual: Epidemiological approach for malaria control, second edition

4 December 2013 – The manual, comprised of a guide for tutors and a guide for participants, has been developed to support health professionals in the planning, implementation and evaluation of malaria control activities.

Just published: Report of a technical consultation on fever management

21 November 2013 -- The report reviews evidence and operational experiences regarding the correct management of febrile illnesses in primary health care facilities and at the community level, and considers existing WHO guidance and priority research.

New publication: Eliminating malaria in Turkey

20 November 2013 -- The fifth case study in the Eliminating malaria series focuses on Turkey. The report has been launched at the 2013 annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, in Washington, DC.

WHO/PAHO honours malaria champions on Malaria Day in the Americas

12 November 2013 -- On the occasion of Malaria Day in the Americas on 6 November, WHO/ PAHO honoured initiatives from Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Brazil for their contribution to reducing the disease burden.

Call for submissions on innovative vector control tools

1 November 2013 -- The WHO Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG) on New Tools is inviting potential manufacturers and academic institutions to submit application dossiers for consideration and review.

Report of the sixteenth WHOPES working group meeting

29 October 2013 -- This report contains the latest assessment of insecticidal compounds and malaria vector control products under WHOPES review, as well as related recommendations. An updated list of WHO recommended long-lasting insecticidal nets is also available.

Malaria control in humanitarian emergencies, second edition

17 October 2013 – The handbook provides policy-makers, planners and field coordinators with practical advice on designing and implementing effective malaria control responses in humanitarian emergencies.

East Asia Summit endorses new leaders alliance for malaria

11 October 2013 -- During the annual East Asia Summit in Brunei, 18 leaders endorsed the creation of an Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA). The key objectives are to reduce the disease burden and to contain the spread of artemisinin-resistant malaria.

World Health Day 2014 to focus on vector-borne diseases

9 October 2013 -- WHO's global campaign will focus on vector-borne diseases, including malaria. It will raise awareness about the threat posed by disease vectors and urge families and communities to take action to protect themselves.

Information note on delayed haemolytic anaemia following treatment with artesunate

9 October 2013 -- Following a review meeting and a consultation with co-chairs of the WHO Technical Expert Group on Malaria Chemotherapy, WHO issued an information note urging the continued use of injectable artesunate to treat severe malaria.

Updated Q&A on RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine candidate

8 October 2013 -- WHO has published an updated Q&A about RTS,S/AS01, a malaria vaccine being developed through a partnership between GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals and the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative.

New WHO guidance on malaria vector control

26 September 2013 -- Following the latest meeting of the Malaria Policy Advisory Committee, WHO issued a recommendation on achieving universal coverage with LLINs, a guidance note on capacity building for entomology and vector control, and another for estimating the longevity of long-lasting insecticidal nets.

Summaries of the World Malaria Report 2012 available in English, French and Spanish

20 September 2013 -- Summary versions of the World Malaria Report 2012 are now available in electronic and printed format in English, French and Spanish. The summaries present the 16 key points to be drawn from the Report, illustrated with figures and maps.

Third edition of the Management of severe malaria – A practical handbook available in French

30 August 2013 -- The handbook, entitled La prise en charge du paludisme grave – guide pratique. Troisième édition, provides new and revised practical guidance on the diagnosis and management of severe malaria.

New publication: Field guide on seasonal malaria chemoprevention

7 August 2013 -- The WHO Global Malaria Programme has released a new publication to support and facilitate the implementation of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC). SMC is recommended in areas of highly seasonal malaria transmission throughout the Sahel sub-region of Africa.

Malaria Situation Room launched at AU summit in Abuja

18 July 2013 -- At the Special Summit of the African Union on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, five organizations announced the establishment of a joint intelligence gathering unit to deliver urgent strategic support to the 10 African countries with the highest malaria burden.

New publication: Operational manual on larval source management

17 July 2013 -- The manual provides guidance to national malaria control programmes on the planning, implementation, management and evaluation of larval source management (LSM) programmes.

WHO progress report on annual UN malaria resolution

28 May 2013 -- WHO’s detailed progress report on implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution 66/289 is available in six official languages. The report reviews progress against 2015 global targets and makes a set of recommendations to Member States.

Sixty-sixth World Health Assembly reviews progress on malaria

28 May 2013 -- During the Sixty-sixth session of the World Health Assembly (20-28 May 2013), delegates noted the Secretariat’s report on progress in implementation of resolution WHA64.17 and on global efforts to control and eliminate malaria.

Policy brief on intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy

13 May 2013 -- Three WHO departments have jointly developed a policy brief to provide further information on the administration, scale up and monitoring of the WHO policy recommendation on IPTp-SP.

25 April 2013 -- Launched on 25 April in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia, this new framework aims to strengthen efforts to contain artemisinin resistance in South-East Asia’s Greater Mekong subregion.

23 April 2013 -- The WHO Global Malaria Programme has released a new operational manual on indoor residual spraying (IRS). The manual will help national malaria control programmes and technical partners to design, implement and maintain high-quality IRS programmes.

New publication: Test procedures for insecticide resistance monitoring

23 April 2013 -- This publication will guide National Malaria Control Programmes in their routine collection, analysis, management and sharing of data on mosquito resistance to insecticides.

Call for letters of interest for grants under the RAcE 2015 programme

18 April 2013 -- The WHO Global Malaria Programme is inviting letters of interest for grants under the Rapid Access Expansion (RAcE) 2015 Programme to strengthen integrated community case management of malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea in children in Nigeria’s Niger and Abia States. The deadline to submit proposals has been extended from 6 May to 13 May 2013.

New publication: Management of severe malaria – A practical handbook

15 April 2013 -- The third edition of Management of Severe Malaria – A Practical Handbook provides new and revised guidance on the diagnosis and management of severe malaria, a condition most commonly caused by infection with P. falciparum malaria.

Update of oral artemisinin-based monotherapy tracking lists

12 April 2013 -- The WHO Global Malaria Programme has updated the lists containing the positions of manufacturing companies and national regulatory authorities on the production and marketing of oral artemisinin-based monotherapies.

Launch of the updated malaria web site

8 April 2013 -- WHO’s malaria pages have been restructured and updated to allow users easier access to the organization’s policy guidance on malaria. New features include expanded content on all technical areas and an improved search function.

Third MPAC meeting concludes

15 March 2013 -- The latest three-day meeting of the Malaria Policy Advisory Committee has concluded. The full agenda and all documentation can be consulted on the dedicated MPAC meetings page. The report of the meeting will be published in the Malaria Journal within two months.

Request for Proposals: Monitoring and evaluation of RAcE 2015 grants

11 January 2013 -- The WHO Global Malaria Programme is inviting proposals for the monitoring and evaluation of activities carried out by grantees of the Rapid Access Expansion (RAcE) 2015 project in five African countries.

The passing of Peter F. Beales

3 January 2013 -- The WHO Global Malaria Programme is saddened to hear of the passing of a former colleague and friend, Dr Peter F. Beales. Dr Beales devoted his life to improving the health of people in developing countries. He joined the World Health Organization in 1956.
