Biography of Dr José Carlos Martines, MD, MSc, PhD.
Coordinator, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Research and Development Team, MCA
After graduating in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Jose Martines specialized in Peadiatrics and worked as a lecturer at the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil. He was the head of the Health Department of the city of Pelotas, Brazil in 1983 when he joined the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK for the MSc course in Nutrition. He obtained his PhD from the University of London in 1988.
He joined the WHO Programme for the Control of Diarrhoeal Diseases in the same year, in charge of research on the prevention of diarrhoea. He occupied various position in child health within WHO, including the coordination of research and the Direction of the Child and Adolescent Health Department.
He is currently the Coordinator of the Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Research and Development Team of the MCA Department at WHO. The Team is responsible for research and development of guidelines, training materials and other instruments in the areas of maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health.
