The role of health services
Overview
In March 2003, WHO organized a global consultation, in collaboration with UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF and YouthNet, on the health services response to the prevention and care of HIV/AIDS among young people: Achieving the global goals: access to services.
Protecting young people from HIV and AIDS: the role of health services is based on the outcome of this consultation, and has been developed for a wide readership of policy makers and programmers. The publication provides an overview of the evidence on health service interventions that are important for achieving the global goals on young people and HIV/AIDS: information and counselling; reducing risk through condoms and harm reduction; and the diagnosis, treatment and care of STIs and HIV/AIDS. In addition, it describes key strategies for delivering these interventions, outlines the quality characteristics of effective health services for young people, and identifies issues that will need to be taken into consideration when developing national targets for measuring progress towards achieving the goals.
