MDG Summit, New-York, USA
20-22 September 2010
With only five years left until the 2015 deadline to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on world leaders to attend a summit in New York on 20-22 September with the aim of accelerating progress towards the MDGs.
A highlight of the Summit will be the launch of the Secretary-General's "Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health", which has undergone extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders in recent months.
In addition, a number of events are being held on the sidelines of the Summit, including one hosted by the heads of the H4+ agencies (WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, the World Bank and UNAIDS) on "Accelerating progress towards achieving MDG 5: Trends and lessons from countries". Representatives of Benin, Botswana, Ethiopia, and Nepal will share experiences and best practices in improving maternal health, advancing equity and accelerating progress towards MDG 5. The panel will also discuss the strategic role of the UN agencies in supporting countries to achieve the goal.
