WHO celebrates World Breastfeeding Week 2008
World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) was celebrated, as it is every year, during the first week of August. The theme of WBW 2008 was "Mother Support : Going for the Gold", and the central message was a call for greater support for mothers to achieve the 'gold standard' of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months, and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond.
Activities undertaken by WHO to promote WBW 2008 included the launch of the following new materials:
- 1. Message of support for WBW 2008 from WHO's Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan
- 2. A new "Fact File" on breastfeeding
- 3. The publication of a revised FAQ on the International Code of Marketing Breast-Milk Substitutes
In addition, the 41st episode of the WHO PodCast featured an interview with WHO's Assistant Director-General for Family and Community Health, Daisy Mafubelu, on the topic of WBW 2008.
