Antiretroviral drugs and breastfeeding
Q.10 Will giving ARVs to infants when breastfeeding cause resistance in the baby?
If an infant does become HIV-infected despite all the interventions to prevent this, then there is a risk of the HIV in the infant developing resistance to these drugs. However, if the ARVs are given correctly and consistently, then this consequence will affect only a few infants. Other ARVs are available and can be given as lifelong treatment in these infants.
