Q.12 Is maternal mortality in HIV-infected mothers increased by breastfeeding?

A 2009 review of the effect of breastfeeding on the health of HIV-infected mothers showed no evidence of harm to the mother. A meta-analysis of 4 237 HIV-infected breastfeeding mothers found no increase in mortality.

The most important predictor of mortality in HIV-infected mothers is their CD4 counts.
