Antiretroviral drugs and breastfeeding
Q.9 Are there implications of administering ARV prophylaxis to mother or baby throughout breastfeeding?
Yes. There are possible consequences when mothers or babies take any drug. The question that always needs to be asked is whether the advantage of the drug outweighs the possible negative effects of the drug.
The evidence available at present indicates that the side effects of these medicines are uncommon, they are mainly seen in the first weeks of breastfeeding, and they do not increase with longer durations of breastfeeding.
