Specific issues regarding replacement feeding
Q.43 What services should be available in clinics in order to provide infant formula?
In order to safely provide formula, a clinic should have a staff member who is trained in infant feeding counselling so that she can explain the risks of formula, and why it must be stored, prepared and given carefully according to the WHO Guidelines on safe preparation of powdered infant formula. A private area where this counseling can take place is needed, which can also be used for demonstrating how to prepare and feed formula milk. The demonstration should take place in private, away from other mothers, as directed in the Code.
Guidelines for health staff should be in place on who can receive formula, under what conditions, how frequently and for how long. The health and nutrition status of infants receiving formula should be monitored.
