International Day of Disabled Persons
Date: 3 December 2006
Place: Observed worldwide
International Day of Disabled Persons is an annual event to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.
This year the theme for the Day is "E-Accessibility". People with disabilities do not enjoy access to information and communication technologies to the same extent as non-disabled people. Information is often presented in formats that are not accessible to people with disabilities, including through the World Wide Web.
Groups around the world involved in disability issues will mark the day in many ways. At its headquarters in Geneva, WHO will host a seminar to raise awareness on the rights of persons with disabilities. In line with the "E-Accessibility" theme, the seminar will draw attention to access to information and communication technologies as a basic human right.
