2nd meeting of the Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group

The true extent of death and disease from contaminated food and the related economic cost is still unknown. Data are scarce from developing countries, where populations are especially vulnerable to foodborne diseases and their effects.

In 2006, WHO launched the Initiative to Estimate the Global Burden of Foodborne Diseases. The initiative combines independent expert advice with WHO's public health leadership capacity to assemble health information.

The Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG), comprising leading food safety experts, acts as a technical advisory body to the initiative.

The second annual meeting of the FERG will take place with the main purpose of:

  • providing the opportunity for members to meet and discuss the progress made over the last 12 months; and
  • reviewing and revising the work commissioned according to the task forces' work plans.

An International Foodborne Disease Stakeholder Event will be organized as part of the FERG meeting. Key food safety stakeholders -- including governments, industry, NGOs, donors, consumer groups and media -- will participate.
