The session was opened by the Chairman of the Executive Board, Mr N. S. de Silva, who is the Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition of Sri Lanka.

In her report to the Executive Board, WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan highlighted the importance of health sector's preparedness for recurring humanitarian crises caused by disease outbreaks, natural disasters and conflicts.

The WHO Executive Board is composed of 34 members technically qualified in the field of health. Members are elected for three-year terms. New members to the 124th session of the Executive Board include Dr A.F.M. Ruhal Haque from Bangladesh.

The Executive Board reappointed Dr Samlee Plianbangchang for a second term as Regional Director for the South-East Asia Region. He first took up office as Regional Director in March 2004.

The Executive Board also appointed Dr Shin Young-soo of the Republic of Korea as Regional Director for the Western Pacific Region. Until recently Professor of Health Policy and Management at the College of Medicine at Seoul National University, Dr Shin has longstanding connections with WHO, having on a number of occasions served on the Executive Board as the representative of his country.
