World Health Assembly President Mr Nimal Siripala De Silva and WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan present the Sasakawa Health Prize for 2009 to Dr Amal Abdurrahman Al Jowder, Acting Director of the Health Promotion Directorate, Ministry of Health, Bahrain. Dr Amal has built an information network that distributes health information nationwide through newspapers, exhibitions, seminars and public lectures.

The State of Kuwait Prize for Research in Health Promotion went to Dr Shaikha Salim Al Arrayed, Head of the Genetic Department in the Salmaniya Medical Complex and Head of the National Committee for Control of Hereditary Diseases in Bahrain. Dr Al Arrayed has successfully implemented the country’s hereditary blood diseases control programme over the past 25 years, achieving 60% to 70% reduction of prevalence among newborns. Professor Konrad Rydzynski of the National Centre for Workplace Health Promotion, Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Poland receives the State of Kuwait Prize for Research in Health Promotion in the presence of WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan and World Health Assembly President Mr Nimal Siripala De Silva. The centre carries out research and analysis of the status and conditions of health promotion in Poland.
