POLIO ERADICATION – STOPPING TRANSMISSION, AND AFTER
WHO and partners will launch the polio eradication strategic plan for 2004-2008.

GLOBAL CAMPAIGN FOR VIOLENCE PREVENTION--MILESTONESThe World Report on Violence and Health, the first comprehensive review of the problem of violence on a global scale, was launched by WHO on 3 October 2002. Since then, a number of significant events have taken place. WHO and the Government of Geneva will host a meeting to reflect on achievements so far and to illustrate the advances that have been made in the field of violence prevention since the launch of the report. National and regional initiatives will be presented, and participants will discuss how to further implement the report’s recommendations.

IMMUNIZATION – THE PROGRESS AND THE GAPS
The WHO/UNICEF Workshop on the Expanded Programme on Immunization in the Pacific will review the progress on a wide range of issues including measles elimination, improving hepatitis B control, disease surveillance, adding new vaccines, and enhancing vaccine quality, safety and availability.

IMMUNIZATION
The Technical Advisory Group on the Expanded Programme on Immunization and Poliomyelitis Eradication in the Western Pacific Region will focus, in its 14th meeting, on implementation of two new initiatives to strengthen the Programme: measles elimination and hepatitis B control. Several other issues will be covered such as maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination.

WORLD HEALTH DAY – ROAD SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT
World Health Day is an annual advocacy event marking the establishment of WHO on this day in 1948. This year's theme is road safety and the slogan is "Road safety is no accident." The Day will highlight the major health impact and societal costs of road traffic injuries, and the particular vulnerabilities of pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and passengers. World Health Organization offices throughout the world will host events involving political leaders, major public figures, road safety experts and the general public. WHO and the World Bank will launch a report on road traffic injury prevention in Paris.

MAY
PREVENTING CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
WHO will launch Recommendations for secondary prevention of heart attacks and strokes. This report outlines the latest scientific knowledge and evidence-based recommendations for preventing recurrent strokes and heart attacks in people with established cardiovascular disease, particularly in poorer areas. The Cardiovascular survey methods which highlights practical methods for undertaking population studies on cardiovascular disease will also be launched.
