Investing in health, the new dimension in development policy: Why and how do it

15 March 2002

Health, a central element in catalyzing economic growth and preparing the ground for future prosperity of countries, is the new dimension in policy for development. Good health policy backed up with adequate funding could generate billions of dollars a year in increased economic growth in low income countries. Innovative work, based on new thinking in the health area, is already making solid progress in disease prevention and control. New initiatives in health can provide inspiration for finding new and creative ways of improving the efficiency of financing for development in other sectors.

The World Health Organization (WHO) will briefly:

Announce how it plans to assist countries to achieve health goals and implement recommendations of the pioneering study by the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health; Explain why large increases in development aid for health are crucial, from where the resources can be tapped and how funds can be quickly channelled to make a difference; and Show how creative approaches to prevention and control of disease are already getting measurable results in terms of lives saved and improved, and could serve as models for other sectors. Harvard Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and Ministers from developing and developed countries, along with WHO, will be pleased to respond to your questions and tell you how talk is turning into action in health.
