Invent for Humanity™ Technology Transfer Exchange Fair & LESI Global Technology Impact Forum, 24-25 January 2012, Geneva, Switzerland

This dual event promoted discussion and networking between IP and licensing professionals and organizations working to benefit developing economies. The Invent for Humanity event dealt specifically with issues surrounding technology transfer to low-and middle- resource settings while the LESI Global Technology Impact Forum focused on the global Intellectual Property (IP) policy, business and economic outlooks while also discussing specifically the challenges behind technology diffusion to developing nations in joint sessions. Additionally, the Invent for Humanity event featured a “marketplace” that displayed a number of appropriate innovations suitable for such settings.

Adriana Velazquez Berumen, coordinator of the WHO Medical Devices Unit made a presentation entitled Health care technology diffusion: case medical devices in the joint session, Technology Diffusion to Developing Nations.

International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF), 28 February to 1 March 2012, Singapore

The IMDRF is an initiative to unite medical device regulators from different parts of the world around the common goal of regulatory harmonization. The WHO Medical Devices Unit will attend this first-ever meeting as an observer. However, an informal consultation will be held outside the meeting with regulators from IMDRF, the Asia Harmonization Working Party (AHWP), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society (RAPS), the Asian Regulatory Professional Association (ARPA), and WHO to discuss collaboration and a practical approach to regulatory training.

Design of Medical Devices Conference, 10-12 April 2012, Minneapolis, MN, USA

The event will bring together a number of different stakeholders involved in medical device design, including designers, researchers, and manufacturers, to share experiences and showcase innovative medical devices. The WHO Medical Devices Unit will present on Medical devices for global health.

Global Forum for Health Research, 24-26 April, Cape Town, South Africa

The forum will focus on solutions for developing capacity in health research in low-and-middle-income countries with the theme: Beyond Aid… Research and Innovation as key drivers for Health, Equity and Development. The event will encourage global collaboration by bringing together governments, research institutions, business, social enterprises / CSOs, international organizations, funders and media to address the issues.

World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, 26-31 May 2012, Beijing, China

This meeting of the International Union of Physical and Engineering Sciences (IUPESM) is held triennially for the purpose of sharing information amongst those in the fields of medical physics and biomedical engineering. The World Congress will highlight issues related to global health and the latest trends in technology to address these challenges. The WHO Medical Devices Unit plans to be involved in several workshops and sessions. Topics may include medical devices, radiation safety and public health to name a few.

Tech4Dev International Conference, 29-31 May 2012, Lausanne, Switzerland

This conference will bring together researchers, knowledge users and other stakeholders to discuss appropriate technologies that will support sustainable development and poverty reduction by identifying new areas for research, increasing awareness, and cultivating partnerships.

mHealth Summit, 29 May - 1 June 2012, Cape Town, South Africa

The summit will focus on leading topics and issues within the mobile health sector. It aims to foster and develop collaborations between various stakeholders such as healthcare institutions, mobile network operators, development organizations, regulators and policymakers. The summit includes an exhibition where numerous innovative mHealth products will be on display.

Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation Conference and Expo, 2-4 June 2012, Charlotte, NC, USA

This event includes educational and networking sessions for biomedical equipment technicians, clinical engineers, biomedical Engineers, asset managers, hospital IT specialists, and other healthcare technology management professionals. The expo will include the participation over 150 equipment manufacturers and service providers displaying the latest in medical technology.

HTAi Annual Meeting, 23-27 June, Bilbao, Spain

The annual meeting focuses on addressing the challenges associated with healthcare technology assessment. The WHO Medical Devices Unit will present at this event.

IET Appropriate Health Technologies for Developing Technologies, 18-19 September 2012, London, UK

The event will focus on exploring effective engineering solutions to meet the healthcare problems of developing countries. It shall bring together healthcare technologists, clinicians, biomedical engineers, researchers and public bodies from around the world. The WHO Medical Devices Unit will present at this event.

17th Asian Harmonization Working Party meeting, TBD

This event will focus on collaboration with numerous parties to bridge the gap and work toward harmonization of medical devices regulations. The meeting will involve directors and relevant officials of the Department of Medical Device Supervision and the Department of International Cooperation of the State Food and Drug Administration of China, representatives from the medical device regulatory bodies and enterprises of more than 20 member economies, as well as experts and scholars from the USA, EU, Japan, Australia and WHO.

Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Meeting 2012, 25-30 November 2012, Chicago, USA

The annual meeting of RSNA will present issues of relevance to radiology, issues such as radiologic science, education and technology.
