Development of Country Profiles and monitoring of the pharmaceutical situation in countries
Overview
Information on the pharmaceutical sector is crucial for informing medicine policy and advocacy work. A comprehensive assessment of the pharmaceutical sector helps to determine what the gaps are in order to design effective interventions and allows evaluation of the the impact of interventions over time. WHO has developed tools to measure key aspects of the pharmaceutical sector and systematically monitor the progress of efforts to improve access to essential medicines. WHO collaborates with Regional and Country Offices to support Member States in the collection, analysis and use of pharmaceutical sector data.
Pharmaceutical Sector Country Profiles
The information captured in the country profiles is used by countries to support policy making and also by partners such as The Global Fund during grant negotiations and for implementation support. Profiles are being used by the Medicines Transparency Alliance for setting baseline indicators for assessing improvements in pharmacetical sector transparency and by the Southern Africa Development Community secretariat in implementing its Pharmaceutical Business Plan.

Pharmaceutical Sector Country Profile Data Collection
The country profile tool collects information on structures and processes and and consolidates data from facility and household surveys and other studies. The tool and comprehensive glossary have been developed with support from global experts and country stakeholders and have been approved by the Global Fund to fight TB, HIV/AIDS and Malaria.
Additional Assessment tools
Households and facility surveys on access to and rational use of medicines (Level II Indicators)
These tools aim to assess whether or not pharmaceutical policies are achieving their intended objectives. The indicators measure the availability, affordability and rational use of medicines. Tools are available to collect information at health care facilities and at household level.
